Here is a genuine superb fossil fish, from the world-famous fossil beds of Fossil Lake, Green River Formation, Wyoming. From the Eocene, 52 million years ago.
It is a Phareodus encaustus, arguably the most voracious of all predator fish in the ancient lake.
Measuring about 13.1 inches, this Phareodus has the "bells and whistles" that serious collectors and museums search for.
To start, take a look at the magnificent teeth, both lower and upper. All sharp and menacing. A couple teeth from the back side of the fish were knocked off and now sit with other front teeth.
Then go around and look at the pectoral fin, hanging from the body, and the pelvic fin. The anal fin is gorgeous. At first glance, it may appear that two of the rays are missing, but if you look up at the body of the fish where the rays start, it becomes clear that all the rays are present and intact. There is just a bit of natural separation in two spots, but you have all the rays.
Continuing on, the tail (caudal) fin is also very nice and full. Finally the dorsal fin, which Mother Nature set far back over the anal fin. It is superb.
Virtually all the vertebrae are in place, missing only a couple anterior vertebrae at the very front. The vast majority are intact and in proper position.  A number of museum specimens of Phareodus are missing all or most of their front (anterior) vertebrae, but not this fish.
The plate is about 16" by 11", and it weighs about 7 lbs. 1 oz. The plate has been permanently reinforced with a wood backing, with a pleasing wood finish on the back.
All in all, an excellent addition to any fish fossil collection.
