    Description

Here is a four-page (three of which are printed upon) Special Report issued by the Board of Masonic Relief in Chicago on February 1, 1872.  A quick scan of the first sentence tells you all you need to know - that this report is referring to the "calamity" that befell Chicago in October 1871 and which we refer to today as the Great Chicago Fire.
This is a brief synopsis of the funds that had been collected so far in the aftermath of the fire with a much more detailed report promised.  According to this account, about 3000 Masonic brethren, widows, and children in Chicago had been aided.  Up to this point, ,389.06 in cash and supplies had been collected.  The report also breaks down contributions by state, territory, and foreign countries and provinces.
The report expresses gratitude to those who contributed and assures the Masonic brethren that Freemasonry continues to survive and thrive in Chicago.  It is "signed" by the officers and members of the Board of Masonic Relief.
This report measures a little more than 8 inches by a little less than 11 inches.  It is printed on white paper that actually shows very little age-related discoloration.  As noted before, there are three printed pages with the back page blank.  There are multiple folds, both horizontal and vertical, presumably so this report would fit into an envelope for mailing.  There is a small, 1/4 inch tear on the outside edge of both pages at the horizontal center fold.  There are a couple of creases at the upper left edge and the lower right edge.  Overall, though, I would still rate the condition of this paper, at nearly 150 years of age, as being good to very good.  There are no stains and no significant tears.  There are no splits along the vertical fold.
If you have an interest in the history of the charitable works of the Masons, this document would be a nice addition to your archive.  If you have an interest in the history of the Great Chicago Fire, this would also make a great addition to your knowledge.
