The Blacksmithing merit badge was one of the original 57 merit badges issued by the Boy Scouts in 1911. It was discontinued in 1952. But there has been a resurgence of public interest in blacksmithing the past few decades, and a number of customers have expressed interest in finding a copy of the Boy Scouts’ booklet on blacksmithing. I found this copy at the Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil Tri-State Round-up, one of the largest and best blacksmith annual meetings in the U.S. SOFA is a member guild of the Artist-Blacksmith's Association of North America. And, with the renewed interest in blacksmithing, ABANA now offers on its website directions for experienced blacksmiths interested in becoming merit badge counselors for the Boy Scouts. Blacksmithing is now one of four options for a Boy Scouts Metalworking Merit Badge.
    According to the flyleaf,
To obtain a Merit Badge for Blacksmithing a Scout must:

Forge a chain hook out of ¾ x ½-inch soft steel or ¾-inch round iron.
Make a bolt of ½-inch stock.
Bend and weld three links and form them into a chain, these links to be fastened to the hook of Requirement 2 by a ring, and links and ring to be made out of 3/8-inch round iron.
Make a straight lap weld of ¼ x 1-inch stock.
Make a cold chisel out of 5/8-inch hexagonal tool steel.
    Temper a rock drill.
Explain how to harden and temper a cold chisel.
