An incredibly elegant late 1940s champagne silk satin brocade evening dress in a gorgeous shade of silvery taupe.
This elegance of this gown is in both the luxurious silk brocade, and the simple lines of the design.  The gown is midi length (tea length), and has a low V front neckline, a fitted bodice, 3/4 length
dolman sleeves
, underarm gussets, a long center back metal zipper, darted cuffs, and an incredibly full skirt that is fitted over the upper hips and then quickly widens out to full sweep with 3 additional full godets inserted in the back - one in the center and one on each side.
The skirt falls in wonderful soft folds but has tremendous movement because of the volume of the luxurious silk that was used in the design of the skirt.  The fabric is a luxurious, medium weight silk satin with a wonderful drape and sheen and features brocaded tied bouquets of lily of the valley in a cream thread, along with tiny hearts.  The subject material of the fabric suggests that this dress may have been a wedding gown, as lilies of the valley profess love and luck in love, and combined with the hearts, this is a very romantic theme.  The gown is beautifully made, and all the seams are finished professionally with blue silk seam binding, and in the case of the hem with blue seam binding and lace.  There is a train holder on the inside left side of the skirt.  Clearly a designer piece, this gown has a label "Creation Laurence", and it was collected in Montreal, Quebec where it was probably custom made.  The approximate measurements of the dress are as follows:
bust (pit to pit)  30"

These measurements are approximately equivalent to a modern US size 2  (Petite) or XS.  There is no give to the fabric.  The gown was made for a petite woman and one of the restrictive measurements in this dress is the narrowness of the bodice, which is as narrow as the waist right up to the bust.  The arms are also slender, and the dolman sleeves to not extend very far down the bodice.  Please review the measurements carefully for fit.  There is so much fabric in the skirt that it would easily be possible for a tailor to take a small amount of fabric from a couple of the godets to add panels to the sides of the bodice and increase the size of the dress.
There are no major condition issues with the dress other than an area of less than 1/2 " long and 1/4" wide thread weakness in the brocade of the fabric of the left shoulder.   There are also some minor light stains and a water stain near the hem on the side with the train holder - the dress could be dry cleaned but I do not have a reputable cleaner in my rural area.  The dress looks and smells clean otherwise, and I am confident that a trip to a reputable cleaner would put this dress back close to its original condition.  The silk satin brocade is in beautiful strong condition, and although there may be a few minor scuffs on the fabric. This is a vintage garment that is at least 75 years old, and there may be some minor signs of age related wear.

Important information on vintage sizing
The sizing of vintage clothing can be very different from modern sizes. An item of clothing manufactured 100 years ago was for body shapes different from our own. Although we quote to the nearest
aproximate
equivalent US size,  we recommend that you review all the detailed measurements provided closely.  If you are not sure if a good fit, please ask us before you purchase.
Please be aware that vintage clothing is neither new nor perfect.  In many cases,vintage clothing has been worn and is no longer new, and that is why it is such a good bargain.  Excellent antique or vintage condition rarely means new - do not expect new or perfect as there will almost always be some signs of wear, especially with older items.  Sometimes we sell newer vintage items that are new old stock (NOS) so they have never been worn and can be in such excellent condition that there are no signs of wear.  But some of the garments we sell are 75 years old or more, and even if they were never worn, the fabric may show signs of wear just from being stored all those years. Please assume that older vintage and antique items may have a little dust and/or a few age spots, unless we have specifically stated that we have recently laundered the item.  Nevertheless, vintage is a great way to dress extravagantly without having an extravagant budget. You can often find extraordinary examples of antique, vintage or designer items that are wearable textile art and will make you look like a million bucks!
