This is a vintage (serial number 211306) Reynolds Contempora Double French Horn. This instrument was originally built as a direct rival to the Elkhart Conn 8Ds of the time, and it plays very well. These horns play similarly to Conn 8Ds since they are both large bore symphonic Kruspe wrap instruments, though the Reynolds has a slightly different tone and responsiveness. This horn is the yellow-brass variant of the Contempora model. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course.
As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few dings and pings as well as pitting, etching, and scratching throughout the instrument. The bell engraving reads: “R/ REYNOLDS/ CONTEMPORA/ ABILENE, TEXAS/ FE-03.”
All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop, and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn hardshell case and a mouthpiece in good condition for play-testing purposes.
How the horn plays: Full, warm and rich sound with a smooth, even and dark tone. The horn is responsive, accurate, and flexible, playing across the range with ease. All registers of the horn speak well and play with good fluidity. The F and Bb sides of the horn match well in timber and intonation once the horn is properly intonated (i.e. the slides are pulled out to the correct amount).
