    Description

Published in 1953, The Spirit of St. Louis by Charles Lindbergh is a remarkable autobiography spanning eight months of the author's life from September 1926 to May 21, 1927, from the idea of making the transatlantic flight to Paris to the finish of the flight itself. Lindbergh masterfully intersperses his life story from his earliest childhood recollections the age of 25 when he made his flight, with precise, careful interpolation of scenes and flashbacks throughout the narrative. It is a stylistic tour de force, with details of the flight and montages told in the historical present tense, giving a sense of suspense and immediacy to the flight itself and events of his early life which Lindbergh sustains through the entire book. This is the autobiography Lindbergh wanted to tell, in contrast to his book We, hastily written in the summer of 1927. The Spirit f St. Louis covers the same ground as related in We, though comes alive with the depths of Lindbergh's personality and literary skill. Publisher Charles Scribner's Sons of New York prepared 1,000 numbered copies for presentation bearing Lindbergh's signature, of which this copy in number 105. This copy is in overall very fine condition bearing wear commensurate with its age. A magnificent and scarce item which would grace any Lindbergh or vintage aviation collection.
