Age:
Eocene
Formation:
Green River Formation
Location:
Kemmerer, Wyoming
Size:
Mioplosus is 11.7 inches long!
This is a very impressive fossil fish from the Green River Shale of Wyoming. The larger fish on the plate is a very large, complete Mioplosus labracoides. This carniverous fish is extra large (ALMOST A FOOT LONG!) and extremely detailed - the bones, scales, fins, and tail are easily seen. The Mio is preserved naturally - very little paint or touch-up has been done, which is extremely unusual. And both back fins are preserved and well displayed, which is also quite uncommon. There is also a cool fossil herring, Knightia eocaena, fossilized partially under the Mioplosus! Both colorful fish are well centered and display beautifully on the large, squared slab of shale - ready for framing! This is a very large (almost 12 inches long!), displayable example of an ancient predatory fossil fish from the Fossil Lake Deposits.
