    Description

These are my Hammer Eye Drifts
These drifts are the ideal size for making 1 to 5 pound hand-hammers.
They are forged from new 4140 tool steel. Due to the nature of drifting hammer-eyes the drift will get very hot during use, so drifts are forged from tool steel but are not heat-treated.
This drift is used to shape and support the eye during forging, after the hammer eye has already been punched.
The drift is made to be hand-held while driving it into the hammer eye. The handle portion is about 1-inch in diameter and has a faceted round cross section. This allows it to be easily and comfortably gripped during use. The overall length is approximately 12 inches!
The handle of the drift may be cooled in water during use, however, the working end should never be quenched. When I use hand-held drifts, I usually keep a small metal bucket of water by my work station. While my hammer billet is heating up, I keep the handle of the drift in the water and the working end out of the water in the air. This keeps the handle at a comfortable working temperature.
This drift can be used for single taper eyes like tomahawks as well as double taper eyes like small axes, and hammers.
Do check out all of my other tools on my eBay store. I have a wide selection of hammers, punches, drifts, chisels, and tongs, and I am expanding all the time.
