Here is a beautiful fossil Diplomystus dentatus, from the world-famous fossil beds of Fossil Lake, Green River Formation, Wyoming. From the Eocene, 52 million years ago.
It is a wonderful fossil fish, just a shade below 18 inches, so we'll call it 17.9". It is Au Naturel, meaning it is just as we found it in nature.  Most large specimens have several areas touched up to make it look "perfect". But there seems to be a growing number of collectors who want it with no paint at all, not one brush stroke, and no restoration, either. That is what we see with this Diplomystus. No paint. No restoration. Also, there is no restoration in the natural plate backing. Only a bit of matrix cleaned off the fish and around the edge of the fish.
The backing is an interesting color, from the 18-inch layer. It is the actual natural backing for this fish, so the fish was not inlaid. The color is quite unique, but again, it is 100 percent natural and the same rustic color we saw when pulling it out of the ancient lake.
The plate is about 24.5" by 15.7", and it weighs somewhere around 16 lbs. 12 oz.  The entire back side has been reinforced professionally with a beautiful sheet of wood, for added strength, or for hanging on a wall if so desired.
The Diplomytsus is in surprisingly nice condition, with only a number of small imperfections. There is a plate shift (not a crack, and it does not split the plate) vertically just beyond the caudal fin, missing the fish. And a much smaller plate shift running through the tail, but not a "loud" shift.
An excellent example of a large fish fossil, sold to you as it was found when taken out of the ground, after 52 million years.

We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA’s, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. In addition, the person selling the item is often the one who writes the COA (potential conflict of interest). Finally, a COA, without a photo of the exact specimen on the COA itself,  is worthless, as it can later be placed next to any other fossil or mineral.  We suggest that in addition to relying on a COA, that people read and study the subject.
