    Description

This is a very rare fish fossil showing a large Prionolepis cataphractus from the Cretaceous period coming out of Lebanon. It contains small fish within its belly that were consumed just before its death. The fossilization had to occur rapidly before the belly contents were broken down. Also contains fossil shrimp near the head of the fish. Prionolepis was a predatory fish with plate-armor and large jaws. They were long and slender and moved rapidly through the water. It is remarkable that such a dynamic ecological event was frozen in time for us to see here.
