Description
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany this item. Here is a fossil fish from the world-famous fossil beds of Fossil Lake, Green River Formation, Wyoming. From the Eocene, 52 million years ago.
From the gastropod beds of Fossil Lake, this is a Phareodus testis, a predator of the ancient lake. Measuring approximately 6.3" in length, this well-preserved, complete specimen has excellent dorsal, anal and caudal fins (tail) as well as a strong vertebrae. This fish still maintains some of the sharp teeth that it had when is was alive. See attached photos.
This plate is from the gastropod beds of Fossil Lake, which features the darker fossil fish as well as fossilized snail (mollusk) shells. This particular plate has many gastropods and gastropod impressions. There are about 2 on the front of the plate and approximately 5 on the back of the plate. A great bonus for this fossil plate!
The plate measures approximately 14.6" x 10.7" and weighs 12 lbs. 8.30 oz. This is a thick plate at about 1" in thickness.
A very nice specimen for any fossil fish collector.
We are happy to enclose a COA (Certificate of Authenticity). Some words of caution about COA's: Do not let them become a substitute for learning about the specimens. We have been working with fossils and minerals for many years, and we have seen hundreds of very nice-looking COA's, some that are wrong, mis-describing a specimen. In addition, the person selling the item is often the one who writes the COA (potential conflict of interest). Finally, a COA without a photo of the exact item described, as part of that COA, is worthless, as it can later be placed next to any other fossil or mineral. We suggest that instead of relying on a COA, that people read and study the subject.
