Description
Original Vintage Novelty Iron Works Dubuque IA Boss Blacksmith Power Trip Hammer. It came out of an old farm blacksmith shop with a bad roof, so every thing is stuck. The anvil base has one mounting ear on the floor missing. Their is some welding on the top die holder. No othervisible
cracks welds or repair. It has the names cast on the anvil base. It stands 75" tall overall to the top of the belt pulley tightener. I would guess it is called a 25# hammer. See photos. No shipping, will need to be picked up here in NE Kansas near Onaga. The last photo is from an old catalog. Can be copied for info, not included with this auction. The following is from the catalog.
Attention is called to the improved Boss power hammer being manufactured by Novelty Iron Works, of Dubuque, Ia. There are many Boss hammers in use in various parts of this country, and they have been shipped to England, Sweden, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
The improved Boss, Fig. 1, is of the guide hammer style, the hammer head being supported within steel guide plates with proper adjustment for wear. There are special provisions for taking up the stretch of the belt without replacing, thus admitting of a sensitive adjustment of the foot lever for starting, stopping: or controlling the speed and force of a blow. The adjustable brake tension admits of stopping the machine with the dies always separated ready to receive the work. By means of the combination brake and tightener lever, the machine is under absolutely perfect control.
The anvil is extremely heavy, weighing as much as all the balance of the machine. It is separated from the base, and, therefore, absorbs shock from the blow of the hammer without undue strain or vibration of the machine itself.
